The BY-BAND trial aims to provide reliable data about the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the two most commonly undertaken surgical procedures for morbid obesity in the UK and internationally. The trial will compare adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) versus laparoscopic gastric bypass (LGBP) surgery for treatment of morbid obesity in a sample of over 700 patients across the UK. We will test the hypotheses that LAGB is non-inferior to LGBP with respect to loss of greater than 50% of excess BMI at 3 years and that LGBP is superior to LAGB with respect to quality of life at 3 years, using the EQ5D. The primary health economic analysis will estimate the cost per quality adjusted life year (QALY) for the two surgery options, the costs of both, and then conduct an incremental analysis. The study will also explore patients’ experiences of obesity management, outcome and lifestyle change.
