Abstract

The North West Public Health Observatory (NWPHO), based in the Centre for Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University, was established in 2000 to provide a range of health intelligence functions for the regional Directors of Public Health. The Association of Public Health Observatories (APHO) coordinates the activities of the 12 PHOs across the five nations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, all of whom are core funded by the Department of Health. The aim of the health profiles to provide a consistent, concise, comparable and balanced overview of the population’s health that informs local needs assessment, policy, planning, performance management, surveillance and practice.
