Health Economics Research Centre (HERC) Virtual Visitor Scheme (Round 2: Latin America)

The Health Economics Research Centre (HERC), University of Oxford has created a “virtual visitors” scheme to allow current or prospective PhD students from low and middle income countries (LMIC) to virtually engage with our group. Virtual visitors will have opportunities for mentoring from HERC staff, to deliver presentations of work in progress to gain feedback from our group, and to attend our groups internal seminars and online events. Virtual visitors will also attend the Applied Methods of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, at no cost.

The virtual visitor will generally be attached to HERC for a period of six months, with online engagement expected over this time. The scheme is entirely virtual and does not involve travelling to the UK, or any funding.

We plan to rotate the visitors from different geographic regions. In this round, we seek applicants from LMICs in Latin America & the Caribbean.

To be eligible for this round of the scheme, virtual visitors will need to:

  1. Have some training in health economics and be based at a university, international body/Non-governmental organization (NGO), public research institute or in the public sector;
  2. be both from, and currently based in, a LMIC in Latin America & the Caribbean - as defined by the World Bank*;
  3. have access to an internet connection that is fast enough to enable you to participate in HERC activities;
  4. be available to attend the next Applied Methods of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (which will be held online from 28 November - 2 December 2022);
  5. have professional working proficiency in English

Applicants considering undertaking a PhD in Health Economics whilst currently working in any of the above named sectors, or those currently undertaking a PhD in health economics or closely related disciplines are eligible to apply.

Individuals currently working in the private sector are not eligible. Those from Latin American & Caribbean countries but who are currently working in, or have previously studied in high-income countries (as defined by the World Bank) are also not eligible for consideration.

To make an application, please complete this online form: https://oxford.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/herc-virtual-visitor-application-latin-america-2022. Additionally, please send a CV (no more than 2 pages), and an example of your health economics research such as an academic paper or thesis chapter via email to: herc.visitorapplications@ndph.ox.ac.uk. Please use the formatting [FULLNAME_CV] & [FULLNAME_WORKSAMPLE] to title your files.

Applications close on Thursday 10th November 2022. As virtual places are very limited, we will be using a modified lottery to allocate visitor places (see recent Nature Editorial on the use of modified lotteries: https://www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/comment/comment-the-british-academy-is-trialling-a-new-fairer-method-of-selecting-its-small-research-grants-heres-why/

Preference will be given to visitors whose research interests align with research areas of HERC (see: https://www.herc.ox.ac.uk/research)

 We plan to offer virtual visitor places for health economists working or studying in LMIC countries in other regions of the world in future. If you are interested in receiving information, please sign up for the HERC newsletter for announcement of future rounds.
