This randomised controlled trial compares quetiapine and lamotrigine combination treatment versus quetiapine monotherapy in people with bipolar depression both for short-term remission from depressive symptoms and longer term freedom from both depressive and manic symptoms. The trial is also investigating the effect of adding folic acid to treatments in a 2x2 factorial design. The main issues to be considered are the relative efficacy, safety, tolerability, costs and cost-effectiveness of the different treatment options, patients’ quality of life, and deliberate self-harm. HERC is conducting the economic analysis alongside the trial.
The trial ended in 2013.
