The HERC Visiting, Health Economic Scholars programme is now open to applicants.

The purpose of this programme is primarily to assist early career health economic researchers (i.e. Post Docs and PhD students who are in the latter stages of their degree) to spend time at the Health Economics Research Centre (HERC), University of Oxford, UK. We may also consider more senior researchers on a case-by-case basis.

HERC was established by the University of Oxford in 1996 and has around 35 staff and students. HERC publishes on a diverse range of topics including: economic evaluation of interventions to prevent and treat infectious and chronic diseases; child and mental health; genomics; health inequalities; as well as a range of methodological health economics issues. The recent funding by the Health Foundation of a new health economics & policy centre will provide the opportunity to expand HERC's research portfolio in future.

Visiting scholars can both propose their own research activities, or use the time to discuss future projects with one of HERC staff. The scholar will be expected to give a seminar during their stay. A visit will also provide for scholars interested in applying for fellowships (eg NDPH Fellowships) or projects that involve HERC researchers to discuss proposals with relevant staff.

The programme will assist the scholar by providing research space and other facilities during the scholar’s stay and up to two weeks of accommodation in a residential college or in nearby private accommodation. Visits would be expected to take place during University of Oxford term vacations, but may be available at other times of the year. Limited assistance for international travel may also be provided.

The programme does not cover any other costs (i.e. living expenses, or visas if required), nor does it provide any type of salary support. The programme is open to both UK based and international health economic researchers (who may need to obtain a visa to visit the University of Oxford).

Those interested in applying need to send an application containing the following:

A current CV listing all publications.

  • Reprints (pdf documents) of up to three articles that you would consider to be the best example(s) of your work (i.e. articles for which you are primary author).
  • Brief (300 words) research proposal in which you indicate either the work programme that you intend to undertake during your visit.
  • Indicate the proposed length of stay (up to two weeks), preferred dates for a visit, and if travel assistance is requested.

Applications should be sent via email to herc.visitorapplications@ndph.ox.ac.uk. The subject of line of the email should contain “VISITING SCHOLARS PROGRAMME: APPLICATION as well as the proposed month of visit (if known)”.

Applications submitted by Friday 12 May 2023, will be considered in the first instance. However, expressions of interest can be received throughout the year and assessed periodically.
