Professor Henry Cutler, Director of the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy, Australian Institute of Health Innovation

Professor Henry Cutler is the inaugural director of the Macquarie University Centre for the Health Economy within the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Australia’s largest health services research group. Prof Cutler has published in world-leading journals, conducted over 200 health economics research projects for government and non-government organizations, and attracted over $40 million in grant funding as a chief investigator.

Prof Cutler has guest lectured at Harvard University and the University of Oxford and has served on several nationally important expert advisory panels for government. In 2024 these included the National Suicide Prevention Office (NSPO) Expert Advisory Group, the Department of Health and Aged Care Expert Advisory Panel for the Review of General Practice Incentive Programs, and the National Disability Insurance Agency Investment Effectiveness Program Academic Advisory Panel. Prof Cutler was an expert witness twice for the Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and advised the Victorian Royal Commission into Mental Health on evaluating the economics of mental health.

Prof Cutler has received numerous awards, including the inaugural Deeble Institute Fellowship by the Australian Health and Hospitals Association. Prof Cutler is regularly sought by national media for comment, and has published opinion articles in The Australian, Australian Financial Review, The Age, The Mandarin and The Conversation. An article written for The Conversation was selected for their book ‘A year of Consequence. Essays that got the world thinking’.
