An Excel spreadsheet listing studies mapping to EQ-5D from other patient-reported outcome measures or clinical instruments is now available here

The database presents details of the sample size, modelling methods and patient population, in addition to the citation details and source instruments that are mapped in each of the 246 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. An article summarising the methods of the literature review and the results of version 6.0 has been published in Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, updating the older article on version 2.0 of the database. The current version (9.0) is based on searches conducted in January 2023; the database will be updated approximately annually as new studies are published.

The database aims to provide a readily-accessible collection of all studies mapping to EQ-5D that is easy to search and filter. We anticipate that this will be useful for:

  • Those who wish to identify mapping studies to estimate utilities for cost-utility analyses and/or decision-analytical models constructed for publication or for submissions to health technology assessment (HTA) organisations, such as NICE, SMC, CADTH or PBAC.
  • Authors, editors or reviewers who wish to assess the novelty of a new mapping study.
  • Those conducting systematic reviews of methods for estimating utilities or QALYs.
  • Those seeking to identify the estimation models and sample sizes currently used in mapping studies and identify new developments for further research.

If you use this database to identify mapping studies for your paper or HTA submission, please cite it as follows:

Studies were included in the database if they conducted statistical mapping to predict EQ-5D utilities or responses from any source instrument and reported the estimated algorithms in sufficient detail to allow other researchers to use them to predict EQ-5D in other studies. Although only studies that map to EQ-5D are included in the review, mapping algorithms to other preference based measures that are reported in the same publication as algorithms mapping to EQ-5D are also presented. The original searches conducted in December 2012 were updated eight times between July 2013 and January 2023. Medline (via Pubmed) was searched in each update, supplemented by EuroQoL Reference Search (, ScHARRHUD (, CRD ( database and the HESG website ( in 2013, 2016 and 2017. Please see the paper for more details.

Errors or omission

While every effort has been made to identify all studies mapping to EQ-5D that report their algorithms or coefficients in sufficient detail that other researchers can apply their algorithm in another dataset, neither we nor HERC can accept responsibility for any errors, omissions, inaccuracies or any consequences arising from the use of this database. Please contact us at if you have spotted any errors in the database or if you are aware of any studies that may have been missed. Please also email us if you would like us to contact you when the database is next updated.
