Members of HERC have provided health economics support to several clinical guidelines commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Judit Simon completed a DPhil in 2008 on the methodology of integrating health economic evidence into clinical practice guidelines.

Pressure relieving devices

A clinical guideline on the use of pressure relieving devices to prevent pressure ulcers was published in October 2003. HERC provided economic support in the development of this guideline including:

  • reviewing the literature;
  • developing a simple decision model.

Depression

A clinical practice guideline for the management of major depression was published in December 2004. The health economics support in the development of this guideline included:

  • summary of the socioeconomic burden of major depression in the UK;
  • systematic review of the economic literature;
  • development of a decision analytic model on the cost-effectiveness of antidepressant treatment and its combination with psychological therapy.

Eating disorders

Surgical site infections

  • questions where further economic evaluation is relevant.

Promotion of physical activity in children
