NICE Clinical Practice Guidelines
Members of HERC have provided health economics support to several clinical guidelines commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
Judit Simon completed a DPhil in 2008 on the methodology of integrating health economic evidence into clinical practice guidelines.
Pressure relieving devices

A clinical guideline on the use of pressure relieving devices to prevent pressure ulcers was published in October 2003. HERC provided economic support in the development of this guideline including:
- reviewing the literature;
- developing a simple decision model.
Depression

A clinical practice guideline for the management of major depression was published in December 2004. The health economics support in the development of this guideline included:
- summary of the socioeconomic burden of major depression in the UK;
- systematic review of the economic literature;
- development of a decision analytic model on the cost-effectiveness of antidepressant treatment and its combination with psychological therapy.

A clinical guideline on the prevention and treatment of surgical site infections. The health economics work comprises:
- summary of the economic burden of surgical site infection in the UK
- a systematic review of relevant health economic studies
- decision modelling for review questions where further economic evaluation is relevant
- questions where further economic evaluation is relevant.
Promotion of physical activity in children
